Architecture
Monastery Refectory of Svyato-Yuriivskyi Male Monastery
Location
Kobaky village, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine
About the Project
A sacred structure that harmoniously complements the existing architectural ensemble of the functioning Svyato-Yuriivskyi Male Monastery in the picturesque Carpathians. The primary objective was to create a functional space for the monastic community while preserving the integrity of the natural environment and the spiritual atmosphere of the site. The project required delicate integration of contemporary architecture with the traditional Hutsul church already functioning on the territory.

Design Solution
We created an architectural composition that interprets the characteristic angles and proportions of the existing Hutsul church in a contemporary formal language. The central concept — “dialogue between tradition and modernity” — is realized through the transformation of historical silhouettes into functional refectory volumes. The multi-level structure organically fits into the natural terrain, minimizing landscape intervention and preserving the spiritual integrity of the monastery complex.
Key Features
Contrasting Materiality
Dark gray horizontal siding as the primary material is complemented by white concrete inserts and warm wooden column accents
Contextual Architecture
The building's geometry reflects the characteristic angles and rhythms of the Hutsul church, creating visual unity with the historical structure
Functional Zoning
First floor with administrative block and refectory for the monastic community, basement level with educational block, utility facilities and kitchen, attic floor with residential quarters
Nature Preservation
Minimal intervention in the existing landscape, use of natural terrain to integrate the basement level, preservation of trees and natural elements of the territory
Materiality
Use of natural materials and tones that resonate with Carpathian architectural tradition and the surrounding environment
Architectural Details
Contemporary interpretation of traditional roof forms, large windows for natural lighting in the refectory, use of wood as the primary material in interiors, delicate accents emphasizing the sacred character of the structure
Result
An architectural synthesis of tradition and modernity that demonstrates the possibility of creating functional monastery infrastructure without disrupting the spirit of place. The refectory organically complements the existing temple complex, creating space for the monastery’s communal life in harmony with Carpathian nature and Hutsul architectural heritage.
