Architecture

Sauna in Loch Sheldrake

Location

Loch Sheldrake, New York, USA

About the Project

A backyard sauna that organically blends Scandinavian wellness traditions with contemporary American design. The client sought to create a year-round retreat space that would become a natural extension of the landscape—a private corner for relaxation that complements rather than disrupts the harmony of the existing garden.

The project addresses several objectives simultaneously: creating an autonomous wellness zone, achieving visual integration with the natural surroundings, and ensuring functionality throughout all seasons. Particular attention was given to proper thermal insulation and vapor barrier systems that guarantee structural longevity and energy-efficient operation.

Design Solution

We created a composition of simple geometric forms—a compact rectangular plan with a gabled roof that references traditional Finnish sauna architecture. The facade demonstrates a striking contrast of two materials: black vertical siding (charred wood using the Shou Sugi Ban technique or black-painted timber) paired with light natural wood. This material contrast emphasizes functional zoning: the dark section contains firewood storage, while the light section houses the sauna proper.

A narrow vertical window beside the entrance adds minimalist character while providing natural interior illumination. The roof features premium dark bituminous shingles with an integrated ventilation system—critically important for moisture management in an environment where temperature and humidity fluctuations could compromise structural integrity.

Structurally, the building is based on a frame system of treated timber. The walls contain a multi-layer structure: exterior cladding with vertical boards of thermally modified pine, foil-faced vapor barrier membrane for infrared reflection, and a thick layer of basalt wool. The floor includes concrete screed with drainage slope, waterproofing, thermal insulation, and wooden grating of thermally treated timber with ventilation gap. Exterior terraces feature thermowood decking on a gravel base with geotextile.

Special attention was given to waterproofing and vapor barriers—critical for an environment with extreme conditions. Foil-faced vapor barrier on the interior wall surfaces with all joints sealed with aluminum tape and a ventilation gap prevents condensation within the wall structures. The thick layer of basalt wool ensures rapid room heating, sustained heat retention, and protection of exterior structures from temperature differentials.

The landscape solution includes several distinct outdoor zones: a fire pit patio with circular concrete bowl surrounded by Adirondack chairs creates a central gathering space; an elevated wooden platform with loungers provides a semi-private relaxation zone; wide concrete pavers with gravel joints connect the zones while ensuring drainage. Preserved mature trees with golden autumn foliage are complemented by ornamental grasses in metal planters, creating a contemporary aesthetic that respects the existing natural environment.

Key Features

Materials and Construction

Frame construction of treated timber with exterior cladding of thermally modified pine boards, dark section executed using the Shou Sugi Ban method, walls contain foil-faced vapor barrier and thick layer of basalt wool.

Functional Planning

Firewood storage integrated into the facade, minimal changing room with hooks and bench, steam room with two-tier benches and stone heater, concealed ventilation and electrical systems.

Engineering Systems

Supply ventilation channels near the heater and exhaust vents below the ceiling ensure natural air circulation, foil-faced vapor barrier with sealed joints prevents condensation in high-temperature conditions.

Nature Preservation

Minimal intervention in the existing landscape, use of natural terrain to integrate the basement level, preservation of trees and natural elements of the territory

Exterior Spaces

Concrete and gravel patio with fire pit for socializing, elevated thermowood platform with loungers for post-sauna relaxation, integrated landscaping creates privacy while maintaining connection with the landscape.

Result

The Loch Sheldrake sauna project demonstrates successful integration of functionality, aesthetics, and technical precision. The compact structure fits organically into the existing landscape, creating a complete recreational zone on private property. Quality materials and proper thermal-vapor insulation guarantee structural longevity and year-round operational comfort, while thoughtful exterior landscaping transforms a utilitarian building into a place for relaxation, family gatherings, and rejuvenation in the fresh air throughout all seasons.
