About the Project
A transformation project for a compact urban backyard in Brooklyn — one of New York’s most densely populated neighborhoods. The primary goal was to create a sense of space and luxury within the limited boundaries of a city backyard. The enclosed area between buildings needed to become a fully functional outdoor retreat, combining an outdoor kitchen, fire pit lounge, and a lush flowering garden — a true green oasis in the heart of the urban environment.

Solution
We designed a multifunctional backyard based on a modular paving system — large-format light-colored slabs with dark gravel joints create a dynamic floor pattern that visually expands the space. A smooth curved boundary between the paved area and planting borders softens the geometry of the fence and adds a natural feel. String lighting across the entire yard creates a magical atmosphere in the evening hours.
Key Features
Modular paving
a combination of large-format light grey slabs and dark fine gravel in the joints creates a textured pattern that visually enlarges the space and gives the yard urban charm. Smooth curved transitions between zones make the compact area feel dynamic and varied.
Outdoor kitchen
a built-in outdoor kitchen with white Hamptons-style cabinetry, dark stone countertop, built-in grill, pizza oven, and Big Green Egg. A fully equipped cooking station for everyday use and outdoor entertaining.
Fire pit zone
a compact fire pit area with metal chairs at the center of the yard creates an intimate gathering space for evening get-togethers, surrounded by flowering plants and string lights.
Planting design
a rich flowering border combines lilac, hydrangeas, lavender, salvia, hosta, and climbing plants along the fence perimeter. The purple-white-blue color palette ensures year-round decorative interest from spring through autumn and creates the effect of a lush garden within a minimal footprint.
Atmospheric lighting
vintage-style string lights stretched across the entire yard transform the evening space into a cozy outdoor setting with a genuine restaurant ambiance under the open sky.
Result
A compact urban backyard transformed into a complete green retreat — with a kitchen, fire pit, flowering garden, and evening lighting. The modular paving system and thoughtful planting design create a sense of generous space where there is objectively very little. A true Brooklyn backyard in the best sense — functional, stylish, and alive.
