Landscape Design

Japanese-Inspired Sauna Garden, New York

Location

New York, USA

About the Project

This landscape design project in New York was created for a family who wanted to turn the compact area around their sauna into a calm, private, and functional outdoor retreat.

The project grew out of our earlier work in the same neighborhood — after seeing the first sauna garden we designed and published, the neighbors reached out and asked us to create a similar Japanese-inspired atmosphere on their own property.

The main constraint was space. The area around the sauna was small, yet it had to hold many functions at once: a sauna zone, an outdoor tub, a fire pit, a seating area, garden paths, privacy planting, and a strong visual connection to nature. At the same time, the clients wanted the rest of the backyard to stay open for active family life, with a large green area near the house reserved for a soccer field.

Solution

We divided the backyard into two clear zones: an open lawn for family activities and a compact wellness garden around the sauna.

The sauna garden was designed with a strong Japanese influence — white gravel, large stone slabs, natural boulders, ornamental grasses, Japanese maples, compact conifers, and dense planting. Together these elements create a sense of privacy, calm, and depth within a limited footprint. The fire pit became the central gathering point, tying the sauna, outdoor tub, seating area, and garden paths into one continuous outdoor experience.

Key Features

Backyard zoning

the yard is split into two clear zones — an open lawn for active family life and a compact wellness garden around the sauna. this keeps the everyday and the contemplative parts of the property separate, with a dedicated green area reserved for a soccer field.

Japanese-inspired character

white gravel, large stone slabs, and natural boulders set the tone, layered with ornamental grasses, Japanese maples, and compact conifers. the dense, deliberate planting creates a sense of calm, privacy, and depth within a very limited footprint.

Wellness core

the sauna, outdoor tub, and seating area are arranged around a central fire pit that acts as the main gathering point. garden paths tie these elements together into one continuous, intimate outdoor experience.

Privacy and sense of place

layered planting shelters the garden from neighboring views and softens its boundaries, making the space feel secluded and complete. the result reads as a true retreat rather than a leftover corner of the yard.

Result

The finished design turns a small corner of the backyard into a highly functional, atmospheric retreat that brings together relaxation, privacy, natural materials, seasonal planting, and a clear sense of place.

It shows how thoughtful landscape design can make even a compact area feel spacious, calm, and meaningful — while leaving the rest of the property open and practical for everyday family life.
